Our People

Franklin Huang, MD, PhD

Principal Investigator

Dr. Franklin Huang is a physician-scientist in the Genitourinary Oncology program at UCSF and an investigator of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. He cares for prostate cancer patients at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center and his laboratory is based at the UCSF Parnassus campus. He serves as a mentor to students and trainees who are interested in cancer genomics, cancer disparities, and global oncology. Along with Dr. Ami Bhatt, he is a co-founder of the non-profit Global Oncology.

Lab Members

  • Hanbing Song, PhD

    Postdoctoral Scholar

Hanbing Song received his Ph.D. in Computational Neuroscience from the College of William and Mary. His research in the lab focuses principally on the genomic analysis of prostate cancer.

  • Heiko Yang, MD, PhD

    Urology Chief Resident

Heiko is a urology resident at UCSF with an interest in bladder cancer. He used our single-cell RNA-seq platform to characterize variant bladder cancer histologies and understand mechanisms of treatment resistance. Outside of the lab, he is working on understanding the sleep patterns and resistant behavior of his two-year-old son.

  • Sarah Hsu, MD, PhD

Heme/Onc Fellow (joint with Luke Gilbert)

  • Jon Akutagawa, PhD

    Postdoc

Jon received his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from UC Santa Cruz. His research interests are focused on using genomic analyses to better understand and address disparities in cancer outcomes. Outside of lab, Jon enjoys making Japanese food and rock climbing.

  • Rei Unno, MD

    Visiting Researcher

Rei is a urology visiting researcher from Japan. His research in the lab focuses on the single-cell RNA-seq for benign prostatic hyperplasia and establishing prostate cancer organoids using electroporation of CRISPR-Cas9 RNPs.

  • Mary Fakunle, MD

    Urology Resident

Mary is a 5th year UCSF urology resident, joining the lab during her research year. She is interested in the genomics of high risk prostate cancer, specifically in men of African descent. Ultimately she wants to continue training in urologic oncology and hopes experience during this year will continue throughout her career. Outside of the lab, she enjoys learning the growth patterns of her >45 apt plants.

  • Nia Adenji

    Medical resident

  • Maggie Tsui

    Graduate student in Biomedical Informatics

Maggie is a graduate student in the Biological and Medical Informatics PhD program at UCSF. She is interested in applying and developing computational methods to advance precision oncology. She majored in Molecular Biology and minored in Computer Science at UCSD for her undergraduate studies.

  • Yusuph Mavura

Graduate student in Epidemiology and Biostatistics (joint with Neil Risch)

  • Tu Le

Clinical Research Coordinator at SFVA/UCSF PCF Precision Oncology Center of Excellence

Tu graduated from UC Berkeley in 2019 with a B.A. in Molecular and Cell Biology and a B.S. in Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology. Tu is interested in learning about cancer progression at the molecular, biomedical, and clinical levels. In her free time, she enjoys taking care of her baby plants and snake.

  • Haowen Liu

    Clinical Research Coordinator

Haowen graduated from UC Berkeley in 2020 with a B.A. in Integrative Biology. In this lab, Haowen is interested in understanding the progression of cancer and how clinical research integrates into patient care. In her free time, Haowen enjoys reading, hiking, and trying out good food.

  • Rebecca Chen

    Lab Manager and Junior Specialist

Rebecca graduated from UC Berkeley in 2021 majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology with a minor in Public Health. In the lab, she is studying single-cell RNA sequencing and cancer paralog gene dependencies. Outside of the lab, Rebecca enjoys snowboarding, rock climbing, and eating good food.

  • Keliana Hui

    Junior Specialist

Keliana graduated from UCLA in 2021 with a B.S. in Biology. In the lab, Keliana is studying what genetic mutations cause cancer in prostate cells using electroporation and DNA sequencing. Outside of the lab, she spends her time as a taste-tester of her sister’s food, and enjoys playing tennis and games on her switch.

  • Julia Pham

    Junior Specialist

Julia graduated from Williams College in 2022 with a B.A. degree in Biology. Her work is focused on studying genomic alterations in underrepresented ethnic minorities in order to promote research diversity and target cancer disparities. In her free time, Julia enjoys taking care of her pet fish and cooking.

  • Helena Cirne

    Junior Specialist

  • Isaac Salzman

    Undergraduate Intern

Isaac is an undergraduate student at Sonoma State University double majoring in Computer Science and Pure Mathematics. At the lab he is analyzing whole exome sequencing data on patients from the RESPOND project.
